Our People of the Parks series celebrates the deep connection Austinites feel to our outdoor spaces – and these photos and interviews might just inspire you to get out there and experience our parks for yourself. If you do, be sure to share a photo or two and tag @austinparksfdn. In the meantime, keep reading to meet Will, one of our very first “People of the Parks”. Will Shoaf moved to Austin in the summer of 2004. He found relaxation, contentment and a love for birding in Austin’s parks. Shoaf’s favorite park: Roy G. Guerrero Colorado River Metropolitan Park. What started out as a park where he played on a softball team slowly transitioned into a place where he took long walks along the water and connected with nature.
After spending time playing softball, disc golf, biking and walking at Roy G., Shoaf was introduced to birding. Lucky for him, his favorite park was the perfect spot for his new hobby. “There are always so many birds! Sometimes I get a great picture; sometimes I don’t. But I always feel rejuvenated afterwards.” Shoaf says he feels lucky to live in a city like Austin which has prioritized creating green getaways to help people feel closer to nature. He’s found such joy in birding and photography that he created an instagram account to showcase his passion – @atxbirdphotos.
Beyond birding, Shoaf recalls the moment he knew his move to Austin was the right decision. In the summer of 2004, a friend invited him to hear the symphony. They packed a picnic and went to Republic Square Park where they laid in the grass, drank wine and listened to wonderful music in a green space in the heart of downtown. “Parks in Austin are the great equalizer. They are open to everyone no matter the income level…no matter my financial situation, I can always visit an Austin park with my family.”
